Open Wide...Dentistry at Dorcas House by Brother Andrew, SSP
Open Wide
Everyone likes to think their family doctor or dentist is the best around. My dentist is Dr. Russell Okihara. I’ve been going to him for my dental needs since I first moved to San Diego in 2001. He attends St. Paul’s Cathedral and is a member of the cathedral Chapter (vestry.)
On February 22 Dr. Okihara spent his Saturday as a volunteer doing dental exams for the children at Dorcas House along with other doctors and nurses who are part of Dorcas House Medical Team. They make regular visits doing physical exams, creating medical files for all the children, and consulting with our Executive Director, Sylvia Laborin and the staff about referrals to other doctors, dentists and therapists.
When asked about his day at Dorcas House, Dr. Okihara said, “The visit was very successful and the kids were very cooperative and had a great time. We did find a few kids with some caries and all of it was discussed with Sylvia. She mentioned that the local dental school would help take care of the treatments. In general, I felt that the children were in moderate to good condition! I’d be glad to head down there again for another assessment.”
It is comforting to know that our kids at Dorcas House had the benefit of dental exams fro one of the finest dentists in San Diego, thanks to Dr. Joanne Reese and Carolyn Lief, R.N. who head our volunteer Medical Team.
